Why so expensive? Well, a filming platform such as the Twin-Squirrel will cost anything between £500,000 and £2,000,000 to buy. It can only do between 300 and 600 hours of revenue work in a year. Its maintenance will cost around £150,000 per year. The rest is accountancy!
Many companies will charge a two hour minimum for the use of a machine – even if you only want to use it for an hour in a day – say as a prop. This is not abnormal and helps to compensate for the potential loss of other more rewarding commercial work.
You may come across occasions where a pilot is charged for separately to the machine. This may well be because the pilot concerned is a specialist in your kind of work and his experience may make the difference between a successful shoot and nothing useful in the can.
